On Tuesday January 27th Innisfail Middle School had a special visitor. As an authentic learning experience, Sarah the Bison came to the school with her owner David Kinsella of Innisfail to share information about Bison and the importance they had with the First Nations People. Grade 5 and Grade 7 study the First Nations as part of their Social Studies curriculum. Sarah was a twin but was abandoned by her mother so David and his family bottle fed her and have been raising her in a separate pen on their Bison farm. Sarah is 9 months old and weighs between 300 – 400 lbs and when she is fully grown, in a few years, could weigh as much as 1000 lbs. Students of Innisfail Middle School, a school of Grades 5, 6 and 7 students, got to pet Sarah and ask David questions. Sarah will be assimilated back into her herd this spring so it was an incredible chance of a lifetime experience for the students.   Thanks to Christine Chalaturnyk for this article.

Student write up by Jessica:  Sarah the bison visited Innisfail  Middle School in Innisfail.  Our grade seven class was the first to see the nine month, 350 to 400 pound bison. At first Sarah shied away from us. Then by the time we were almost done she came to us to get petted even though she wouldn’t leave Dave Kinsella (her owner). A full grown female weighs about 1000 pounds on average. Sarah weighs roughly around 376 pounds. Her hair felt very soft and fluffy on her back and the hair down on her legs was quite coarse. Sarah is darkly colored down around her legs and light brownish by her hump. That was our experience with Sarah the bison.
